  • XAVIER RUDD TO HEADLINE SOLSTICE AT THE MOUNT 2023

XAVIER RUDD TO HEADLINE SOLSTICE AT THE MOUNT 2023

    2024 Line-up & Tickets Here

We are incredibly excited to announce that Xavier Rudd will be headlining our Opening Ceremony concert ‘Solstice At The Mount’ taking place on Wednesday 21st June 2023 at Wasing’s beautiful new woodland amphitheatre, The Mount. Occurring on the same day everywhere on the planet, the Solstice connects everyone in a truly global moment.

At Wasing we see things differently. That we are inherently part of nature and that what harms the planet ultimately harms us; everything is connected. And it is from this alternative narrative in an ever-changing world that the iconic Mount was born as a fresh and pioneering space for people and planet to connect, unplugged from everyday reality.

Solstice At The Mount will inaugurate this beautiful new space and begin our journey into providing immersive musical experiences in the heart of nature. We invite you to join us for an incredibly special, alcohol-free evening where we will celebrate music from different parts of the world with vibrant cuisine in a unique, natural setting; connected, present and in the moment.

Australian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Xavier Rudd, the incredible one-man band, will perform his intoxicating blend of folk, blues and reggae supporting social consciousness, environmental issues and Aboriginal rights. We’re such fans of Xavier and his awe-inspiring music is perfectly suited to the launch of our incredible new venue.

“When I first got successful I was surprised, because I thought what I was doing was more like art,” he says. I was experimenting with didges and gaffa-taping them to chairs and I always had this real love for wood and the tones of wood, so it was all very earthy.”

Those instinctive beginnings eventually yielded the more crafted and purposeful likes of Spirit BirdNanna (with his nine-piece band the United Nations), Storm Boy and seven more live albums — though nobody could ever count those early bootlegs swapped by fans from Argentina to the Czech Republic, serving to double his audience on each return.

Today, Xavier’s relentless upward arc is among the most astounding success stories of our time. Countless more celebrated acts have come and gone like fireworks as his campfire steadily grows: a beacon to the kind of music fan that seeks sustenance in a fast-food world.

“I value the simple things in life,” he shrugs. “I value community, culture, our connection to the earth as human beings. I don’t care too much for the other stuff. I think the roots of who we are, and what our ancestral lines are and how those stories have shaped us are the most important things. And I guess I always celebrate those things in my music.”

As a child, at one with the sea and sand, inventing songs for his own enjoyment, Xavier set the tone for a life where creation was its own reward, and a gift not taken lightly. “I’ve always felt like I’ve had this old woman spirit with me that that is prevalent in my music, and I’m a vessel for that old woman to speak,” he explains, not for the first time as others try to understand his innate connection to his craft.

“I don’t need to understand who that is or what that is, I just need to be a clean, strong vessel for that to come through, and be humble about it; to realise it’s something that resonates within me and I just need to hold space for it, not let my ego get in the way.”

The spiritual conviction was there long before Xavier discovered the unsettled legacy of his paternal great grandmother, who would disappear from public records after being taken from her Wiradjuri homelands to Melbourne. “There’s stuff we’ll never know,” he says. But awareness of his ancestry, in all its myriad threads, clearly informs not just the earthy tools but the profoundly inclusive message of his music.

“The thing is, in Australia, a lot of us come from tough stories, no matter where we’re from,” he says. “The convict stuff is easy to find because it was documented but Indigenous history isn’t. But I feel sorry for everyone in this country. No matter what our bloodline is, everyone’s been denied culture.”

“I feel like with this record, I’ve been able to be really creative and I’m excited about what I’m making just because I’ve had time,” Xavier says. “I’ve had the chance to do it all myself, which I haven’t done since Spirit Bird in terms of instrumentation and stuff, so I’ve been getting a bit trippy with an analog synthesizer…”

There’s the sound of nature in its purest form, too, in the birdsong that continues to weave its spell through Stoney Creek and elsewhere. “I use birds a lot,” he says. “Often they won’t sound like birds. I use a lot of natural sounds, from everywhere. It’s sometimes hard to determine what they are, but the record is full of them.

“I’ve been here long enough to realise that for some people, what I’m saying in my music really resonates,” he says. “You know, all of our ancestors around the planet have come from some form of struggle and we carry that, all of us, years on. We’ve all got stuff to heal. And I think music is the greatest medicine on the planet.”

Returning to the stunning natural landscape of the Wasing Estate near Reading for its fourth year, 17-21 August 2023, Medicine Festival – an alcohol and drug-free event – offers a remedial alternative to the archetypal rock n’ roll hedonism that permeates the UK festival season.

Remi Olajoyegbe, Co-Founder of Medicine Festival, says: “With indigenous elders once again headlining our event, this year’s festival will be a Mecca for wellbeing, ceremony, world music, dance, sacred activism, nature connection, multicultural arts and a joyful celebration of diversity.

“Medicine is proud to be part of a growing global movement that is reigniting the ancient ways, reviving natural healing modalities, pioneering land-based technologies, bridging cultures and embracing the interconnectedness of all life as we strive to revive our planet at this critical time.”

Expanding in response to popular demand for 2023, Medicine will increase its numbers on site from 3,500 to 5,000 this year. Reflecting this expansion, new areas will include:

    • Ubuntu: showcasing changemakers and undiscovered talent from the African Diaspora
    • Sacred Sound Temple: holding voice/sound workshops and medicine music performances
    • Gwynns Grove & The Haven: for tantra, sexuality, men’s/women’s, queer, non-binary and LGBTQ workshops

A C.I.C and not-for-profit organisation holding the principle of reciprocity at its core, Medicine’s founding principle is that all profits each year go towards empowering indigenous peoples to preserve and protect their land, traditions and wisdom.  Finally making a profit for the first time in 2022, Medicine has so far donated over 33K to selected charities like Survival International and Amazon Watch, and a variety of exciting projects across the globe, including a cultural restoration initiative for the Yawanawa tribe in Brazil and a programme providing education for Tibetan monks. “Four years in the making, we are delighted that the prayer of Medicine has finally become a reality,” says Zak Avery, Co-Director of Medicine Festival.

The eclectic mix of music at this year’s event will encompass world music, folk, electronic dance and sacred songs from different global traditions. Headliners include: Sam Garrett (UK), Nessi Gomes (UK/Portugal), The Human Experience (USA), K.O.G (Ghana), Laboratorium Piesni (Poland), Fia (USA), Ayla Nereo (USA), Fanna Fi Allah (Sufi music, USA), Awaré (Yugoslavia),  Etherwood (UK), DJ and climate activist El  Buho (UK), and London-based Somali artist, FaceSoul.

An enlivening Wellbeing Programme plays host to ecstatic dance legends Kareem Raihani (Amsterdam) and Mushina (Portugal), Movement Medicine maestro Ya’Acov Darling Khan, and offers a diverse spectrum of  workshops and healing modalities – from yoga, meditation, breathwork and bodywork, to nutrition, forest bathing, reiki and massage.

Once again, the Family area, will offer fun games, creative activities, woodland adventures, storytelling and workshops for the youth in music making, bushcraft, foraging and sharing skills and inspiration for creating a healthier and more sustainable future

This year’s expanding range of cafes and street food will bring a tantalising mix of vegan and vegetarian food, aligned with the festival’s principles of regenerative and independent food production, plus vitalising cacao, elixirs and juices will also be available.

Strolling through wild woodland, beautiful parkland and past tranquil lakes, you’ll encounter fantastical theatre, storytelling and comedy performances, thought-provoking film screenings and a colourful miscellany of walkabout performers, poets and fire jugglers.

Jenna Ansell, Managing Director of Medicine Festival, says: We are excited to unveil our newly expanded 2023 event and hope you can join us to explore the myriad ways you can experience the medicine, and be the medicine, as we come together for this wondrous, ceremonial celebration of life.”

Medicine Festival 2022 at Wasing Estate

A rare festival that you leave feeling better than when you arrived”.  The Guardian

    Featuring:

Indigenous leaders: Peu Nawa and Towahu of the Yawanawa, Brazil

Headline speakers: Satish Kumar, Dr Scilla Elworthy, Bruce Parry, Dr Rosalind Watts, Charlotte Du Cann

Music headliners: Peia, Fia, Nessie Gomes, Ajeet Kaur, Millicent Chapanda, The Turbans, Crussen

Returning to Wasing this August (18th – 21st), for its third year, is Medicine Festival – a unique remedial festival experience which invites people to come together and envision a more enlightened, peaceful and sustainable world.

During our times of environmental and economic meltdown, and health and mental health crisis, Medicine Festival provides a vibrant platform for indigenous Wisdom Keepers across the planet to share their teachings, ceremonies and time-honoured technologies, and invites people to be ‘the medicine’ for the Earth and all its inhabitants.

A C.I.C and not-for-profit organisation, funded by a council of social investors – with all profits from the event going to preserve indigenous communities and to regenerate the Earth – Medicine is about interweaving communities, bridging cultures and inspiring a deeper understanding of how to tread lightly and live harmoniously on our planet.

Ceremonies and rituals (for example sweat lodge, cacao and water) will be hosted by indigenous leaders Peu Nawa and Towahu of the Yawanawa tribe in the Brazilian Amazon, as well other indigenous elders from the British Isles and different global traditions, curated to support reconnection and to regenerate reverence for all life.

Music at this year’s event promises an eclectic mix of world music, electronic dance, folk, indigenous songs and sacred music representative of different global traditions. Headliners include ritualistic folk songstresses Peia (Oregan/USA) and Fia Forsström (Sweden); British-Portuguese singer, Nessie Gomes; world folk singer and yogi, Ajeet Kaur; Zimbabwean mbira musician, Millicent Chapanda (UK-based); legendary multicultural troubadours, The Turbans (London); contemplative sounds maestro Crussen (Sweden); and electronic dance wizard, James Monro.

At the festival’s heart, the Liminal Lake features talks and discussions with leading thought leaders and changemakers, such as eminent environmentalist Satish Kumar, peace activist Dr Scilla Elworthy, explorer/indigenous rights activist Bruce Parry, psychedelic research pioneer Dr Rosalind Watts, and cultural change writer Charlotte Du Cann, covering the critical issues of the day – social justice, our disconnection from Nature, chronic illness, increased polarisation and division in societies, and the ethics of technology including social media and artificial intelligence. Also covered here will be consciousness and spirituality, ancient and future tech, neuroscience and philosophy, myth and narratives, economy and localisation.

The festival’s Wellbeing Programme includes guided movement and ecstatic dance sessions, yoga, meditation, martial arts and nutrition as well as a blend of modalities to find balance and restoration, ranging from breath and bodywork, sound healing and meditation, to laughter yoga and forest bathing. The Healing Villages offers 1:1 body work through different massage styles, reiki and other deep healing techniques.

The in-house cafés at Medicine support regenerative and independent food production, nourishing our soil, our bodies and minds, boosting biodiversity, and creating healthier communities. The festival also offers a delectable cultural diversity of Street Food, and the cafés will serve warming chai, energising cacao, sublime elixirs and nutritious juices.  All food offerings will be vegan and vegetarian to reduce environmental impact and promote healthy plant-based diets.

A Family area, geared around equipping the younger generation with skills and insights for creating a better world, includes activities like woodland adventures, games, bushcraft, music making, foraging, plant identification, storytelling and astronomy.

An exquisite diversity of entertainment, arts and performance designed to enliven the soul will include inspiring film and theatre, magical storytelling and uplifting comedy. The tranquil woodland, lakes and parkland will be punctuated with a colourful array of walkabout performers, fire spinners, immersive actors and silver-tongued poets.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming Medicine Festival back to Wasing. If you’d like to book tickets, please click here

    PYO Pumpkin & Woodland Trail

At the heart of stunning Wasing Estate lies a very special field that’s home to our organic Jack O’Lantern pumpkins. This traditional and much loved variety, with its bright orange skin, is perfect for both carving and making delicious homemade recipes including pumpkin pie and soup. To celebrate this new crop and for the first time in Wasing Estate’s history, we’re inviting you to a Halloween event taking place daily from 22nd – 31st October 2021 from 9am to 4pm.

Follow a magical little woodland trail through the Estate’s stunning autumnal woodland and along the way, encounter upon some enchanting creatures inspired by those resident in our trees and fields. The leafy pathways lead to the pumpkin field where visitors can collect a wheelbarrow and pick their own pumpkins to take home and carve. Enjoy hot and cold refreshments at the end of the route including pizza and hot chocolate.
